Designing Adventures, Crafting Experiences

Computer, video and mobile games are the medium of the future. Already today, more than 40% of Germans profess their love for them, with 90% playing them multiple times a week. Games mean entertainment and business, yet they also reflect personal expression and global perspectives – and most of all, they're a lot of fun. As a game designer, you’ll create innovative game mechanics and shape game narratives. With your expertise, you’ll be involved in all stages of development: from the first idea through to the technical and creative conceptual design and finally the design of spaces and characters.

At the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE), you’ll have the unique opportunity to put together your own combination of game design, development and art, which means that you’ll get familiar with the individual disciplines as well as their mutual influences during a game design degree.

This programme gives students a high degree of autonomy so that they can work in developer studios while developing games themselves. Typical areas would be (e.g.) game-, system-, level-, or narrative designer, game writer or artist, environmental artist, character artist, 3D modeller or texture artist.

You’ll have classes in the areas of game design, game art and game programming, as well as their interplay with each other. From the first semester on, you’ll learn how to master the development process in teams on a project basis. To round out the development of your games and prototypes, you’ll learn about the theoretical aspects of gaming as a medium, receive an overview of the financial perspectives and get insight into the industry at the national and international levels. In interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, and study trips, you’ll expand your horizons.

The salary of a game designer can vary depending on the training. In general, jobs after a degree are better paid than after an apprenticeship. According to mystipendium.de, you can expect a starting salary of around 3,000 euros gross per month with an academic degree. However, depending on the size of the studio/company, regional variations and your own experience, starting salaries and also later salaries can vary.
