Students at a private university are eligible for government support according to the German Training Assistance Act (BAföG). The amount of support depends on your income and assets. If you are eligible for support, you should fill out the application form as soon as possible upon being accepted to University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE).
The BAföG financial support typically consists of a combination of grant and interest-free loan, with half of the support being provided as a grant. To ensure affordability, there is a maximum repayment limit of EUR 10,010 for the loan portion, giving students peace of mind knowing they won’t have to repay more than this amount.
EU citizens
EU citizens have various options to meet the personal requirements for BAföG. For students who work in Germany while studying, the following criteria must be met:
- For initial BAföG application, the student should have been gainfully employed in Germany for a minimum of ten weeks.
- Ongoing employment throughout the student’s studies is necessary to maintain BAföG entitlement.
- The employment should allow for full-time study.
- Proof of permanent residence is required, particularly for EU citizens who have legally resided in Germany for at least five years. This can be demonstrated through a permanent residence card issued by the authorities.
- There should be a connection between the student’s studies and previous employment. The employment should have been undertaken in Germany and started at least six months before the commencement of studies.
- Personal BAföG requirements for EU citizens can also be fulfilled if the right to freedom of movement is derived from a spouse, partner, or dependent children.
Other international student
Non-EU international students in Germany can potentially receive BAföG benefits if they meet specific conditions.
- These conditions include holding a permanent residence permit or a certain type of residence permit.
- The specific types of residence permits that make students eligible are as follows: a. Being a recognized asylum seeker, refugee, or having a residence permit on humanitarian or political grounds. b. Spouses or partners of German citizens (German nationals). c. Students who have custody of a minor child with German citizenship. d. Spouses, partners, or children of foreigners with a German permanent residence permit (§ 30 or §§ 32-34).
- In some cases, students may need to have resided in Germany for a minimum of 15 months, although the details of these cases are unspecified.
- Students staying in Germany with a visa/residence permit for study purposes (§16b) are not entitled to BAföG unless they simultaneously meet one of the other aforementioned requirements.
- Ukrainian students or students with a residence permit from Ukraine may have simplified access to BAföG due to their background, as many Ukrainian students change their refugee status to study purposes.
