Capture Your Future

Today, society is surrounded and influenced by a wealth of photography like never before. We see it as our task to give students an understanding of the visual and technical skills necessary to understand, critically question and reflect on different visual languages. Understanding the medium of photography and its conscious use is therefore indispensable not only in art but also in advertising and editorial work.

During your BA Photography studies, you’ll familiarise yourself with and try out various photographic genres, such as portrait, fashion, art and documentary.

MA Photography Programme

We nurture students’ unique photographic vision and independence, promoting experimentation and social responsibility. Our programme offers diverse photography genres and interdisciplinary electives, supporting various projects. With small class sizes and personalised attention, we help students discover their strengths and distinctive style. Taught by industry-renowned photographers, our programme opens doors to careers in image editing, freelancing, and advertising. In today’s competitive landscape, creativity and soft skills are crucial alongside technical proficiency.

A bachelor’s degree in Photography & New Media opens numerous career paths, such as image editor, art buyer, retoucher, or curator.

The programme is divided into module groups. Basic modules cover creative skills like light, colour design, image composition, and both analogue and digital workflows. Theoretical subjects provide an overview of historical and contemporary developments in art, photography, design, and film. Project modules allow specialisation in photography genres. Students can use our professional equipment for their projects.

Interdisciplinary courses, workshops, and study trips let students gain knowledge from other design courses. Options for internships in Germany or abroad, or guest study programmes at partner universities, aim to broaden personal and professional horizons before the final semester, which focuses on defining each student’s individual photographic profile.

The salary after studying photography as an employee can vary depending on the industry, company size and location, but also on other factors. According to mystipendium.de, a gross monthly salary of around 1,600 to 4,000 euros can be expected for an employed photographer, whereas career starters should not expect more than 2,000 euros, according to Career Jump.

As a freelance photographer, the monthly salary is strongly dependent on the current order situation - how high the individual hourly rate turns out depends, among other things, on one's own experience and previous portfolio. As a beginner, an hourly fee of at least 80 euros is realistic, with additional fees for the image usage rights in some circumstances - however, depending on the client and personal brand awareness, this can increase.

Apply now for your Photography & New Media studies! The application deadlines end shortly before the start of each semester, so you can also start at UE at short notice. However, you can apply up to one year in advance - simply fill out our application form online.
In addition, we require a portfolio for the Bachelor's degree programme in Photography & New Media, consisting of a selection of your projects. How exactly you present yourself and which work samples you would like to include is your own decision. If you still need help with your portfolio, our regular portfolio workshops are a useful option.

Prepare 2-3 series of photos and fewer individual images (all in all at least 20 images). The photographic projects can be supplemented by other media such as videos, drawings and graphic design.
Important: In the application phase, you must have already decided in which of our degree programmes you would like to study. However, please note that you may change programmes at a later time if desired.

Choosing the right study degree that is matching your interests best can be hard. For the upcoming semester, we offer you the chance to get a sneak peek into your desired study programme. Our foundation diploma will allow you to understand your professors as well as teaching material of the different creative study programmes more in-depth. Obtain a degree that matches your strengths and interests best.

Important note: Please select "Undergraduate + Foundation" as the programme type when applying via our online portal.
