Seminar series ‘Cross-Cultural Approaches to Desirable AI’

This seminar series, “Global Perspectives on Ethical AI,” is designed to foster cross-cultural and interdisciplinary discussions on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI). Its core mission is to promote research on AI and its relationship to social justice, with a particular focus on intersectional feminist and anti-racist frameworks. The initiative is a collaboration among leading universities, including those in Cambridge, Bonn, Tokyo, and the University of Europe for Applied Sciences.

We bring together scholars and experts from diverse disciplines, with participants at all stages of their careers, to explore the intersection of AI and digital technologies. By integrating insights from both the arts and sciences, the series aims to engage students from technical and engineering fields, encouraging them to reflect on the ethical dimensions of AI.

The term “ethical AI” emphasizes the need for technologies that prioritize social justice and environmental sustainability. The goal is to move beyond technological efficiency and design AI systems that respect and embody the cultural values and needs of various communities. This approach calls for sensitivity to diverse perspectives, while avoiding challenges like cultural appropriation or superficial diversity efforts in AI development.
