At UE, you can develop your potential and personality. As a communication designer, you’ll communicate complex issues visually which will influence thoughts and actions. The work you create will not only be aesthetic but will also convey multifaceted messages and emotions. To achieve this, content must always be understood in its cultural, social, ecological and economic context. Designers are the driving force.
While studying this bachelor’s degree, you will learn from experienced professors and lecturers from the creative industries, using our extensive infrastructure of workshops, libraries, studios, and laboratories. You’ll also have access to an analogue letterpress/lead typesetting, screen-printing, risograph, darkroom, photo studio, print and scan lab, MacPools and a game lab.

Curriculum | Communication Design

Across six semesters, the communication design curriculum provides students with a broad understanding of the industries that shape communication design. From language and typography to design and innovation, students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of skills and gain good knowledge in the field by choosing to study communication design at UE.

Kommunikations - Design

The programme at a glance

The practice-oriented bachelor’s degree programme in Communication Design develops your professional knowledge and your creative-conceptual confidence in equal measure. During your studies, you will design concepts in the fields of corporate identity, advertising, cross-media campaigns, interface design, app and web design, interaction design, editorial, poster, book, logo and much more. You will learn to initiate innovative solution processes, moderate methodically and work in team structures.

Throughout your studies, we offer practical phases and excursions where you can apply and improve your newly acquired skills.

: In addition to design fundamentals and design theory, a special focus of the BA Communication Design lies in the area of future-oriented digital media. In addition, you can expect exciting insights into the study programmes of Photography & New Media, Illustration, Film & Motion Design, Game Design and Business, because our interdisciplinary study structure makes you an all-around fit for your future.
Within this bachelor's degree programme, you will learn from experienced lecturers from the creative industries and use our extensive infrastructure, consisting of workshops, library, studios and laboratories. Analogue letterpress, typesetting and screen printing are among the techniques you'll be experimenting with. A darkroom and a photo studio are also available, as well as a Print & Scan Lab, Mac Pools and a Game Lab. A wide range of topics allows you to co-determine and expand your study content. You can also choose your specialisation and expand your interdisciplinary knowledge and skills.
You will broaden your perspective in interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, excursions and study trips. In the fifth semester, you also have the opportunity to try out your creative skills directly during an internship or semester abroad.

Thanks to their acquired software skills and creativity, our graduates can be active in a wide range of fields after their communication design studies - from classic print and digital media to pure online communication.

Our graduates work in advertising and communication agencies, as creative professionals in design offices or as independent freelance designers. The clients: companies, public institutions, NGOs, start-ups, publishing houses and many more. Good communication is always needed everywhere, and career prospects are correspondingly diverse!

The amount of your starting salary with a BA in Communication Design always depends on the future employer. Especially in business, salaries are significantly higher than in the print industry or in creative and media agencies.

Depending on the entry-level position (for example, trainee or junior position), you can expect an average gross salary of about €1,500 to €2,500 per month. After a few years in the profession and the corresponding experience, salaries of up to €5,000 are possible.

The monthly salary for a freelancer varies depending on the number of paid-for projects as well as the industry and clients you are designing for. The average hourly rate for German freelancers is around €60 to €70.

Apply now for your Communication Design studies! The application deadlines end shortly before the start of each semester, so you can also start at UE at short notice. However, you can apply up to one year in advance - simply fill out our application form online.

In addition, we require a portfolio for the Bachelor's degree programme in Communication Design, consisting of a selection of your design projects. How exactly you present yourself and which work samples you would like to include is your own decision. If you still need help with your portfolio, our regular portfolio workshops are a useful option.

Prepare about 8-12 work samples which show your strength in visual communication. E.g. drawings, sketchbooks, collages, photographs, moving images, interactive projects, websites and other creative projects. Also, sketchbooks are welcome. All work should be accompanied by a short text reflecting on the project or work.

Important: In the application phase, you must have already decided on which of our degree programmes you would like to study. However, please note that you may change programmes at a later time if desired.

Our foundation diploma will allow you to understand your professors as well as the teaching material of the different creative study programmes more in-depth.
